Oceans of Sand

1000 miles into the ocean from Gibraltar, you will encounter a very small island that stands tall as an oasis from the deep. The island of Madeira contains every type of landscape imaginable, from lush rainforests to dry deserts!

 

While hiking in a more arid region of the island, with our eyes adjusted to weeks at sea looking at endless waves, it was shocking to see a creature we frequently view on the ocean trapped in the dry rocky landscape we saw before us.

This seagull stood atop red windswept rocks with dried flowers at his feet as he surveyed the world around him.
